This GIANT Toad Oozes Drugs - The Sonoran Desert Toad!
Amphibians have evolved some incredible chemical weaponry, but this enormous toad may have taken things a little too far by biologically synthesizing both illegal drugs and deadly toxins.
In this episode of The Wild Report, we embark on a nocturnal adventure in the deserts of Arizona to try and find the largest native toad in the United States, the Sonoran Desert toad! With the monsoon rains kicking in, we'd also have the chance to encounter some other rarely seen species along the way, including the couch's spadefoot toad and regal horned lizard!

If you've made it this far in the description, remember to be safe when creature adventuring! Most wild animals can cause injury if harassed, and I do not recommend attempting to capture any creatures without purpose and practice. The reason that I interact with wildlife is to produce these educational videos, and I am a professional biologist. Also, I always ask permission from a land owner before exploring on their property, and you should do the same.
Keep adventuring everywhere, and keep your adventures safe at all times!

The Fastest Snake in the Southeast: The Coachwhip Snake!
IF YOU THINK THAT SNAKE WAS FAST, YOU SHOULD SEE MY EX-WIFE IN A BAR ON FRIDAY NIGHT!
They are surprisingly strong snakes. There was one in my car and I was trying to get her out and as I pulled her she pulled me. I let her relax and cought her later. She was so calm.
If you are a groundhog, you better keep your ass deep underground.
Consider installing a Screech Owl nest box on your property. Owls eat rodents which host ticks and pit vipers rely upon for food. Cottonmouths also known as Water Moccasins being an aquatic pit viper are less reliant on rodents. However they can be trapped in Minnow traps. Pit vipers can be taken to a medical facility for milking to make antivenom and studied or given to Zoos or used for Taxidermy displays at Natural History Museums or dispatched and turned into leather or left for ant food. They shouldn't be re-released like this naive did. Bears, Cougars, Gray Wolves, Black Vultures and pit vipers should be eliminated from our beautiful land and kept in Zoos. Twelve year old children should be safe to pick blackberries along the creek and fish in ponds without fear of dangerous Man-eaters and poisonous killer pit vipers. Good luck to those in Alligator, Burmese Python and Shark areas. Screech Owls have a 90% diet overlap with Copperhead snakes and a more than 60% overlap with Rattlesnakes. Over the long-term the installation of Screech Owl nest boxes and late Winter or early Spring Controlled Burns every ten years can help eliminate pit vipers.
Spiders are the minority of the insect kingdom. Lol
Another feature of copperheads is the eyes, they have vertical pupils instead of round ones and their head is heart shaped.I like the markings on their bodies, hershey kisses, my favorite candy!!
I have never heard of a wandering spider having a deadly bite. Unless he means just it's prey.
Oh, talk about misinformation! Young man, you will cause some poor soul to be very careless around one of these, and lose life or limb. You fail to mention that a snake can inject a much larger amount of venom than a bee. People die from their bite, and they don’t have to be allergic to the venom, even so some people are. By the way, why are you holding that basically harmless and docile snake at such a distance?
Time to move out of North Carolina. The state belongs to them now
'Horny Toad' is so much more of a cuter name despite it being ""technically incorrect"" (we all know, btw)
Yeah I know, but gosh dang it's so confusing.
Hmm. wonder who the F was the 1st person to think to lick a Toad? Not the first thing that comes to mind when I see a toad.
I know, right? The world may never know.
I didn't hear you mention it, so I assume the toad drug doesn't absorb through the skin. Great video, all you bug and reptile boys give us loads of fun information.
Well they can definitely absorb water and I assume (but need to check) partially respire through their skin, but toads are typically the least absorbent of the amphibians. Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed!
Three very cool species. The spadefoots look alien and the Sonoran toad will make you think they really are.
Thanks Trent! Haha nicely put
Is it illegal to give them kisses 🤔 Ouch!!!! Catus hugs are no joke
Haha you'll have to contact the authorities with that question. Yup, it was worth it though.
Watching your channel takes me back to my childhood. Spent all my time in creeks and fields looking for critters. I’m 60 now and keep my property unkept and wild to make attractive to as many species as possible.
That's awesome, I'm glad to hear that you're continuing to keep your property wild and maximize biodiversity.
Thank you Ben Happy 4th🎉
Happy 4th, thanks for watching!
Don't you need surgical gloves to pick any amphibian ? Especially a wild one?
I'd recommend gloves if you are going to handle multiple amphibians in a single outing or when working with sensitive species, but generally I just ensure there is a barrier of either water or sediment between my hands and the amphibian skin so that my skin oils don't interfere with their mucus layer.
That horned lizard with his little frill! He's like a tiny triceratops!
Gosh he was an absolute cutie for sure, definitely one of the coolest wild lizards I've ever seen.
Once again you have brought us another great video. The title is excellent.
Thanks Issac, this was a fun one to produce!
🙂😎❤💯
Happy 4th of July, everyone! Nothing says America like giant drug toads, am I right?
Happy Independence Day!
I grew up in SW Oklahoma and spent a lot of my youth playing with horny toads. Unfortunately they kind of disappeared. What happened?…..also twice a year millions of tarantulas would appear for a couple of weeks and hop all over the place. They too mostly disappeared. Do you have any clue what happened? Thanks young man. PS….I live in Louisiana now and we have lots of tarantulas but they look a lot different than the ones in Oklahoma.
That's so dissappinting. I think a variety of factors could be responsible, including invasive fire ant invasions and a changing climate altering natural migration patterns. Development and the resulting habitat destruction is the most likely candidate though.
Ben it's Been awhile. You know I Love your education videos ❤. I wish you the Best and Happy 4th of July My friend. Ben Zino I Love Your videos you educated me. Happy 4th of July. Happy 4th, Walter! I'm trying to get videos out more frequently, but am pretty busy with school and work stuff. Thanks for your support, it does help keep me going!
@@TheWildReportOfficial Ben Zino just keep doing what you're doing I will always be there supporting you my friend. I believe in You My Friend 😉👍❤️.
Really interesting that the horned toad is a victim of invasive red fire ants. And unfortunately the DEA is rounding up all the poor little Sonora toads. Better call Saul. Great show Ben. Thanks for taking one for the team.
Yeah it's pretty unfortunate, fire ants really are the worst. Glad I could show off a few amazing species, even if it did result in a cactus spining.
@@TheWildReportOfficial The 7 minute format is great. Not too long, not too short.
@@cliffpeebles9705 Thanks for that feedback! I definitely think my favorite videos to make are in this range, because it gives me a chance to share all the information I think is important and also showcase other species beyond the feature.
Ben, was that toad finger licken good?
You know it
Can I buy one
Haha not from me
The good stuff eh???!!! Lol jk nice one buddy, awesome video 😂
Haha thanks man!
Haven’t watched yet. Best title ever. I approve
armed with psychotropic drugs people have been arrested for licking the drug toads Great quotes. Even better video.
Sounds like a punch line, right? "I got busted for toad licking".
How many licks does it take too get too the psychedelic center of Tootsie Frog? 🐸
That is the question
I loved seeing the actual snapping behavior. Hadn't seen it before. God, they're so fast!
Yeah they are awesome, it is how they make their living after all!
❤
If I were to keep a hot, it would be a copperhead.
Perfect video! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
Honey Bee venom ??? Let him sting you then get back to us..... Good luck
We have golden orb spiders in Australia 🇦🇺 won’t kill you but can make you a bit sick 🤔 maybe if you are allergic don’t know made me sick
Lil snek
Alot also depends on time of the year (or here in SW MO). In spring they can be a bit agressive as they are having their young or mate searching. I was right on top of one along side a river bank on some property I own in mid Spring. the grass was up to around my mid-shin level so could not see the ground well but heard and felt a vibration much like a bumble bee. after a few seconds i saw his tail go right between me feet. By the grace of God, I was not bit. i didn;t realize they vibrate their tales when threatened. Since then, I'm much more careful where I'm stepping and have seen a few since then. As long as i don;t get totally infested by them, they have as much right as i do to that river
Yeah they can be incredibly well concealed in thick waterside vegetation, I'm also glad you didn't get tagged. In my experience, unless they are directly stepped on they aren't likely to strike.
OMG When the rattler was up in the air and he was kneeling right in front!!!! I would've been SCARED
I love how she’s constantly using her pedipalps. Whilst she’s walking across your skin. Lovely little lady.
She was adorable
If he's wild and not sedated for you, let him go. Yap Yap Yap and he's sitting there like, shaddup, man, I had my eye on a phat phish babe!
I had a cousin who was an alligator gar. Great guy!
No way, I have a cousin who is an alligator snapping turtle. What're the odds?
@@TheWildReportOfficial Your cousin isn't named Lenny by chance is he?
@@BrostroTheWizard This is wild
@@TheWildReportOfficial NOOO WAAAAAY! I knew it!!! Tell him Paul and I say Hi!
It's beautiful. Very cool 😎 ❤❤❤😊😊😊 love spiders ❤
I accidentally caught a 38lb common snapper on a trout spinner! When I went to let it go, it stayed on land following me and snapping.I had to get behind it and lift it and plop it in the water. I tried the new humane grab, and its long back leg kicked off my stomach, and it almost got me. So I grabbed the tail and carried it to the water. In 45yrs of catching them by hand or accident , I never caught an angerier snapper !
Bro found a gold skultula
Bite: 2k PSI 😮
Dude works out. He is shredded. Quads nicely defined and thick. Stay strong my man. Cool video. Lots of turtles around here in windsor ontario. Now i know how to safely move them and look like a pro...to pick up chics of course.
Has anyone talked to ma boi Gary as of late? No? I should call him and check in… I’m gonna call him… should I call him? I should. I should call Gary. Just to… you know… check in.
Spiders can be so beautiful but knowing myself, if I were to see one I'd run away immediately.
Same, I wish I wasnt so freaked out by them.
Yeah my sister got bite by one as a kid in Japan. Its almost was deadly. At 40 years she still has the scare.
