This GIANT Toad Oozes Drugs - The Sonoran Desert Toad!
Amphibians have evolved some incredible chemical weaponry, but this enormous toad may have taken things a little too far by biologically synthesizing both illegal drugs and deadly toxins.
In this episode of The Wild Report, we embark on a nocturnal adventure in the deserts of Arizona to try and find the largest native toad in the United States, the Sonoran Desert toad! With the monsoon rains kicking in, we'd also have the chance to encounter some other rarely seen species along the way, including the couch's spadefoot toad and regal horned lizard!

If you've made it this far in the description, remember to be safe when creature adventuring! Most wild animals can cause injury if harassed, and I do not recommend attempting to capture any creatures without purpose and practice. The reason that I interact with wildlife is to produce these educational videos, and I am a professional biologist. Also, I always ask permission from a land owner before exploring on their property, and you should do the same.
Keep adventuring everywhere, and keep your adventures safe at all times!

    Consider installing a Screech Owl nest box on your property. Owls eat rodents which host ticks and pit vipers rely upon for food. Cottonmouths also known as Water Moccasins being an aquatic pit viper are less reliant on rodents. However they can be trapped in Minnow traps. Pit vipers can be taken to a medical facility for milking to make antivenom and studied or given to Zoos or used for Taxidermy displays at Natural History Museums or dispatched and turned into leather or left for ant food. They shouldn't be re-released like this naive did. Bears, Cougars, Gray Wolves, Black Vultures and pit vipers should be eliminated from our beautiful land and kept in Zoos. Twelve year old children should be safe to pick blackberries along the creek and fish in ponds without fear of dangerous Man-eaters and poisonous killer pit vipers. Good luck to those in Alligator, Burmese Python and Shark areas. Screech Owls have a 90% diet overlap with Copperhead snakes and a more than 60% overlap with Rattlesnakes. Over the long-term the installation of Screech Owl nest boxes and late Winter or early Spring Controlled Burns every ten years can help eliminate pit vipers.

    Oh, talk about misinformation! Young man, you will cause some poor soul to be very careless around one of these, and lose life or limb. You fail to mention that a snake can inject a much larger amount of venom than a bee. People die from their bite, and they don’t have to be allergic to the venom, even so some people are. By the way, why are you holding that basically harmless and docile snake at such a distance?

      Well they can definitely absorb water and I assume (but need to check) partially respire through their skin, but toads are typically the least absorbent of the amphibians. Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed!

    Don't you need surgical gloves to pick any amphibian ? Especially a wild one?

    • @TheWildReportOfficial
      @TheWildReportOfficial 11 годин тому

      I'd recommend gloves if you are going to handle multiple amphibians in a single outing or when working with sensitive species, but generally I just ensure there is a barrier of either water or sediment between my hands and the amphibian skin so that my skin oils don't interfere with their mucus layer.

      That's so dissappinting. I think a variety of factors could be responsible, including invasive fire ant invasions and a changing climate altering natural migration patterns. Development and the resulting habitat destruction is the most likely candidate though.

    Alot also depends on time of the year (or here in SW MO). In spring they can be a bit agressive as they are having their young or mate searching. I was right on top of one along side a river bank on some property I own in mid Spring. the grass was up to around my mid-shin level so could not see the ground well but heard and felt a vibration much like a bumble bee. after a few seconds i saw his tail go right between me feet. By the grace of God, I was not bit. i didn;t realize they vibrate their tales when threatened. Since then, I'm much more careful where I'm stepping and have seen a few since then. As long as i don;t get totally infested by them, they have as much right as i do to that river

I tried the new humane grab, and its long back leg kicked off my stomach, and it almost got me. So I grabbed the tail and carried it to the water.
